불금 is short for ‘불타는 금요일’ which means ‘FriYay’ or ‘T.G.I.F. (Thank God It’s Friday)’.

The literal translation is ‘hot/burning Friday’.

In the early 2000s, Korea introduced a five-day work week, making Fridays a symbolic day for workers and students as they could enjoy weekends off.
