Hangeul is composed of 14 consonants and 10 simple vowels.

In this post, we will focus on learning another 4 of the 14 consonants, specifically the aspirated ones that are pronounced with the release of a burst of air.

In the word “코,” the Korean letter “ㅋ” is the aspirated version of “ㄱ”, sounding like “k”, with a burst of air as it is pronounced.

In the word “피,” the Korean letter “ㅍ” is the aspirated version of “ㅂ”.

In the word “차,” the Korean letter “ㅊ” is the aspirated version of “ㅈ”.

Korean does not have a native “f” sound so the English word “coffee” is transcribed into Korean as “커피”.

When spelling English words, the “r” sound, especially when it appears between two vowels, is often left out and the first vowel is emphasized – “pahh-tee” as in the case.
