-ㅂ니다/습니다 is a formal sentence-final ending used to politely make a statement about an action, state, or fact.


A: 아침에 주로 무엇을 먹습니까? What do you usually eat in the morning?


B: 저는 아침에 과일을 먹습니다. I eat fruit in the morning.

1. -ㅂ니다

: Verbs with stems ending in a vowel or ㄹ


물을 자주 마십니다. (마시다 + -ㅂ니다)

I often drink water.

창 밖에 눈이 내립니다. (내리다 + -ㅂ니다)

It’s snowing outside the window.

아침에 빵을 먹고 출근합니다. (출근하다 + -ㅂ니다)

I eat bread in the morning and then go to work.


2. -습니다

: Verbs with stems ending in a consonant


지금 집에 아무도 없습니다. (없다 + -습니다)

There’s no one at home right now.

요즘 날씨가 많이 춥습니다. (춥다 + -습니다)

The weather is very cold these days.
오늘은 기분이 좋습니다. (좋다 + -습니다)

I feel good today.
